For its third concert in the “Switch” series, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) will perform the music of the Russian masters Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev, under the baton of Music Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak. Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov will be the featured soloist in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. The program also includes Polonaise from Eugene Onegin by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, and selections from Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev.

ABOUT THE PHILIPPINE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA:

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra is the country’s leading orchestra. It was established in 1973 as the CCP Philharmonic Orchestra, which was originally intended to accompany performing artists at the CCP Main Theater. In 1979, it was reorganized through the efforts of former First Lady Imelda R. Marcos together with Maestro Oscar C. Yatco. The PPO has since collaborated with renowned Filipino and foreign artists either as soloists or conductors. It continues to promote music appreciation among Filipinos through its regional outreach concerts and workshops. The PPO is now headed by its new Music Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak. Coinciding with its 39th concert season, the PPO is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

Polish conductor Grzegorz Nowak is the new Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. A much-sought-after conductor with a long career in opera and concerts, Maestro Nowak is a highly-esteemed Permanent Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He was the music director of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, Poland, from 2017 to 2020, and other orchestras in Poland, Germany, Switzerland, and the USA. For years, he was able to record orchestral music in over 80 CDs that have received awards and 5-star ratings.

Grzegorz Nowak’s career propelled to international level after he won various prestigious awards and prizes. He has performed alongside many of the most widely respected soloists of our time, including Martha Argerich, Yefim Bronfman, Nigel Kennedy, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gil Shaham and Krystian Zimerman, and has worked with such singers as Janet Baker, Kathleen Battle, Marilyn Horne, Gwyneth Jones, Sherrill Milnes and Anja Silja.

Khozyainov has performed with the London Philharmonia Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, The Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland among many others.

Born in Blagoveshchensk in 1992, a city in the Russian Far East, Khozyainov began to play the piano at the age of five and his musical talent was discovered immediately. He moved to the capital to continue his studies at the Central Musical School, and at the age of seven he made his public debut with the Handel Piano Concerto at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He graduated from the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory with the Gold Medal and “The Best Student of the Year” award.

At the present time he lives in Germany, where he has received an Advance Degree at the Hannover Hochschule fur Music under the guidance of Professor Arie Vardi.

In 2012 he won the 1st prize at the Dublin International Piano Competition and at the Sydney International Piano Competition. He additionally received the following special prizes: “Best performance of both Concertos voted by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra”, “Best performance of a work by Liszt”, “Best performance of a work by Schubert”, “Best performance of a virtuoso study” and “Youngest finalist”.

In 2020-2021 Nikolay Khozyainov recorded the Complete Works of Frederic Chopin. He released 4 CDs on CD Accord, Naxos, JVC Victor with works of Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert. His music is published by Muse Press.
