DESCRIPTION:

The 21st Century Art Museum’s visual arts collection at the Cultural Center of the Philippines showcases a diverse range of artworks including paintings, photos, drawings, sculptures, prints, and reliefs. The collection focuses on printmaking, abstraction, experimental, and conceptual art from the 1970s to the 1990s. The exhibition titled ‘Selections from the 21st Century Art Museum Collection’ aims to introduce Philippine contemporary art from the 1960s to the 1980s to a wider audience. The exhibition is divided into two sections: ‘The Possibilities of Luminance’ and ‘Man and Nature’, highlighting artists who pushed the boundaries of traditional art forms and created conceptual, experimental, and abstract works. These exhibitions explore both figurative and non-representational art forms, influenced by the artists’ creative expressions, spontaneity, materials, and personal philosophies.

The Possibilities of Luminance (Mga Tangka ng Tanglaw)

Location: Gallery XXVII, National Museum of Fine Arts Galleries

‘The Possibilities of Luminance’ explores the concept of brightness as an artistic expression. Discover the interplay of lightness and darkness, as well as the control and intensity of light in the artworks. The term tanglaw or light connotes the visual perception and traversal of lightness and darkness. It also presents an understanding and control of light that is expressed through the intensity of its light source.  Explore the world of luminance and its artistic possibilities.

Man and Nature (Tao at Kalikasan)

Location: Gallery XXVIII, National Museum of Fine Arts Galleries

‘Man and Nature’ contemplates the visual expressions of man and nature through the works of renowned National Artists for the Visual Arts. Immerse yourself in modernist and abstract art practices from the Philippine contemporary art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. Experience a fresh perspective on landscapes and everyday life portrayed by these talented artists.
