MEBUYAN’S COLONY BY LEEROY NEW (CCP EARTH DAY INSTALLATION 2024)
PRESENTED BY:
Cultural Center of the Philippines
DATE | VENUE:
April 25 to June 25, 2024
CCP Front Lawn
DESCRIPTION:
Mebuyan’s Colony by Leeroy New is a work that fuses the artist’s fascination with Philippine mythology and science fiction. The installation has morphed into different forms while retaining its foundation made of giant spheres on bamboo stilts, referencing the goddess Mebuyan, described in Bagobo mythology as a goddess residing in the underworld. Pods akin to wombs allude to Mebuyan’s dual role as the goddess of death and fertility.
In celebration of Earth Day 2024, Mebuyan’s Colony now takes on its fourth iteration as it stands on the front lawn of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. New incorporates the 2024 Earth Day theme of “Planet vs. Plastics”, mixing organic and recycled materials to create a multisensory installation of foliage, discarded plastic bottles, bamboo, and steel.
