 DESCRIPTION:

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), under the baton of Maestro Grzegorz Nowak presents “Europa,” the fourth concert of its 40th season – FORTE. This program brings to life the vibrant and diverse sounds of European classical music, featuring works by Kodály, Tchaikovsky, and Dvořák.

The evening begins with Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, a spirited homage to the folk traditions of Hungary. The spotlight then turns to renowned violinist Aylen Pritchin, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Known for its lyrical beauty and virtuosic demands, this masterpiece remains one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, a work full of pastoral warmth, Bohemian melodies, and joyous exuberance that celebrates the beauty of nature and the spirit of his homeland.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra is the country’s leading orchestra. It was established in 1973 as the CCP Philharmonic Orchestra, which was originally intended to accompany performing artists at the CCP Main Theater. In 1979, it was reorganized through the efforts of former First Lady Imelda R. Marcos together with Maestro Oscar C.  Yatco. The PPO has since collaborated with renowned Filipino and foreign artists either as soloists or conductors. It continues to promote music appreciation among Filipinos through its regional outreach concerts and workshops. The PPO is now headed by its new Music Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.

Polish conductor Grzegorz Nowak is the new Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. A much-sought-after conductor with a long career in opera and concerts, Maestro Nowak is a highly-esteemed Permanent Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He was the music director of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, Poland, from 2017 to 2020, and other orchestras in Poland, Germany, Switzerland, and the USA. For years, he was able to record orchestral music in over 80 CDs that have received awards and 5-star ratings.

Grzegorz Nowak’s career propelled to international level after he won various prestigious awards and prizes. He has performed alongside many of the most widely respected soloists of our time, including Martha Argerich, Yefim Bronfman, Nigel Kennedy, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gil Shaham and Krystian Zimerman, and has worked with such singers as Janet Baker, Kathleen Battle, Marilyn Horne, Gwyneth Jones, Sherrill Milnes and Anja Silja.

Aylen Pritchin is one of today’s most sought-after and versatile violinists, performing repertoire from early to contemporary music on both period and modern instruments. Winner of numerous awards, including First Grand Prize at the 2014 Long-Thibaud International Competition, Pritchin’s 2023/24 season features debut performances with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Saint-Saëns 3), WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln (Beethoven) with Maxim Emelyanychev, and Camerata Nordica in a Sweden tour. He also returns to Il Pomo d’Oro Orchestra (Mozart 3) and Taiwan Philharmonic (Korngold).

A celebrated chamber musician, highlights include his debut at Just Klassik Festival, Landshut Kammermusik Festival, and a return to Austria’s Lockenhaus Festival. In March 2024, he joins Maxim Emelyanychev in recital at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, performing works by Brahms, Dvořák, and Grieg.

Pritchin’s past collaborations span leading orchestras worldwide, including Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta, with conductors like Teodor Currentzis, Christian Arming, Shlomo Mintz, Olivier Ochanine, and Yuri Simonov. He has performed at prestigious venues such as Wiener Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and Tokyo’s Toppan Hall.

His discography includes critically acclaimed recordings: Brahms Violin Sonatas (2021, Aparté), Debussy-Hahn-Stravinsky (2022, Mirare Productions), and a 20th-century solo violin album with Ad Vitam Records. Pritchin currently teaches at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf.
