Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s whimsical opera Così fan tutte takes viewers to an emotional ride into the different facets of love and relationships as the CCP’s The Met: LIVE in HD culminates its eighth season on December 5, 2023, 5:30pm, at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 1, in Makati City.
Set in Naples, the dark whimsical opera follows two soldiers Fernando and Guglielmo who were challenged by Don Alfonso to prove that their respective lovers, sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi, are faithful. The opera is a rollercoaster ride of emotions as it tackles infidelity, trust, romance, heartbreaks, and all that young love stories are made of.
Directed by Phelim McDermott, the opera features an amazing set inspired by the Coney Island of the 1950s. The boardwalk amusement park-like set becomes the backdrop to stellar performances of the cast, composed of breakout young artists including soprano Amanda Majeski, mezzo-soprano Serena Malfi, tenor Ben Bliss, and bass-baritone Adam Plachetka.
Baritone Christopher Maltman, as the scheming Don Alfonso, and Tony Award–winning actress Kelli O’Hara, who triumphed in her 2014 Met debut in Lehár’s The Merry Widow, complete the cast.
Conductor David Robertson brings to life Mozart’s colorful and heartfelt score. Based on Met program, the score of Cosi fan tutte is elegant and refined on its surface and dramatically insightful on closer inspection. It is often possible in this opera to tell who is siding with whom, and to what degree, in the various ensembles, whereas the characters’ individual development is apparent in the diversity of their solos.
The opera, which is part of Met’s holiday series, first premiered in 1790 at the Vienna Court Theater. The opera was the third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, following Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni.
To provide live performance, young soprano singers Sherine Ann Koa and Isabela Samson Madero will be performing Cosi fan tutte’s duet Ah Guarda Sorella and Come Scoglio aria on Decembet 5, before the opera screening.
Known as a versatile and accomplished artist., Madero is an associate of the Royal Schools of Music in London. Meanwhile, Koa, a multiawarded soprano and an associate of the Royal Schools of Music, demonstrates a distinguished track record in the field of music.
The CCP’s The Met: Live in HD Season 8 is presented by Cultural Center of the Philippines, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Filipinas Opera Society Foundation, Inc., and Ayala Malls Cinemas.
