The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with De La Salle University’s Green Media Group (DLSU GMG), presents an exciting lineup of award-winning films as part of Omnibus: Mise en-scène, an annual hub for cross-media visual arts by the DLSU GMG, with the aim of providing a platform for all art lovers and creators. This event celebrates the breadth of Filipino cinema and visual arts and is open to the public.
A wide selection of films from Cinemalaya, CCP Art House Cinema, and CCP Cine Icons will be screened at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium (TYA) and Learning Commons of the De La Salle University from July 18-20. There will also be talkback sessions after selected screenings.
On July 18, 5PM, at the TYA, Dustin Celestino’s ‘Ang Duyan ng Magiting’ opens the film festival at the TYA. This drama film won the Cinemalaya 19 Special Jury Award and stars Dolly De Leon, Agot Isidro, and Paolo O’Hara. A talkback with the filmmaker will follow after the screening.
Jose, a student, leaves his mother a letter to inform her that he’s leaving home to learn why people decide to join the underground movement. His decision reaches Michael, the chancellor of the university where he studies. Michael invites Jose’s professor, Victor, to his home to ask him if he had anything to do with Jose’s decision. They get into a heated argument and Victor’s principles and courage are put in question. After a few days, news reaches Victor that Jose is missing; rumored to have been executed by the renegade Police Chief, Gabriel Ventura. Victor sees this as an opportunity for him to prove his principles about nationalism and patriotism. He plots to murder Gabriel as a means to provide justice for Jose.
Come July 19 at 9:30AM, Sheryl Rose Andes’ ‘Maria’ premieres at the TYA. This documentary won Best Documentary Film at the 2024 FAMAS Awards.
Maria is a common given name to a Filipina. In 2016, Duterte’s drug war left 26,000 to 30,000 families, fatherless or husbandless. The wives and mothers of the killed victims are left trying to meet both ends for their families. The documentary follows three women named Maria after the bloodbath of Duterte’s drug war. A staunch supporter turned victim, a wife and mother fighting for their rights, and a woman who became a beacon of hope.
Also at 9:30AM at the Learning Commons, CCP Arthouse Cinema will screen Gawad Alternatibo films. For Set A, films featured are Eugene Hontiveros and Nicole Salazar’s ‘Alon’, Nicole Yvonne Lee’s ‘Arena’, Yvonne Elizabeth Salazar and Isabel Margarita Valenzuela’s ‘Lingkis’, Jason Enriquez-Roque’s ‘p*t @ 1!+tl3 m0r3! (Put a Little More!)’, Josh Van Ulric Campo’s ‘All the Things Left Unsaid’, and Ryan Miguel Capili’s ‘elehiya para sa mga memorya (an elegy for the memories)’.
Set B will feature Alvin Joshua Gasga and Elisha Shem Domingo’s ‘Ang Liwanag ng Bakunawa (The Light of Bakunawa)’, Jannela Kyla dela Peña’s ‘RRRWGHHRW (Carabao Noises)’, Alliah Jasreel Padre, Michael Andrew Colarina, and Ivan Cris Caraon’s ‘Grace’, Laurence Llamas’ ‘Pagtangis ng mga Aninong Umiindak sa Hangin’, Kyle Justin Rebutica’s ‘An Kamaturan’, and Kyle Cyrill Chauncy Cruz’s ‘Sa Mga Mata ng Bata’.
A year-round cinema program geared towards the cultivation of film literacy through screenings of films, videos, and new media complemented by discussions and lectures, CCP Arthouse Cinema aims to attract and nurture more film enthusiasts.
By 6PM on July 19, Cinemalaya Shorts will be featured at the TYA with the films ‘Asan si Lolo Me’ by Sari Estrada, ‘Disconnection Notice’ by Glenn Lowell Forneste Averia, ‘Eyeball’ by Thop Nazareno, ‘Kontrolado ni Girly Ang Buhay N’ya’ by Glib Baldoza, ‘Sa Among Agwat’ by Don Senoc, ‘Sa Gabing Tanging Liwanag ay Paniniwala’ by Francis Guillermo, ‘The Ordinary Things We Do’ by David Corpuz, and ‘The Shoemaker’ by Sheron Dayoc.
On July 20, at 9:30AM, the Cinemalaya 16 Best Film ‘John Denver Trending’ by Arden Rod Condez premieres at the TYA. It is a drama film about the sudden upending of a fourteen-year-old farm boy’s life when a video of him brutally attacking a classmate goes viral.
The film went on to win Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Actor, and the NETPAC Award at the 2019 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor at the 2020 FAP Awards, Best First Feature at the 2020 Young Critics Circle Award, and the Jury Prize of the International Jury, Best Film (Critics Jury Award) and Audience Award (Feature) at the 2020 Vesoul Asian Film Festival.
CCP Cine Icons’ ‘Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon’ is the closing film for the Omnibus: Mise en-scène Film Festival. It is directed and written by National Artist for Film, Eddie Romero, and co-written by Roy C. Iglesias, starring Christopher De Leon, Gloria Diaz, and Eddie Garcia. A talkback will follow after the film screening.
The film narrates the adventures and misadventures of a naive peasant boy, Kulas, who wanders through the Philippine Revolution of 1896-1898 and the Philippine-American War of 1899-1901. The events serve as catalysts for Kulas to come to a realization about his identity as a man and as a Filipino.
This award-winning historical and romance full-length film scored three wins at the 1977 Famas Awards including Best Music, as well as five wins at the 1977 and 1981 Gawad Urian Awards including Best Film of the Decade, Best Picture, and Best Director. It won six awards at the 1976 Metro Manila Film Festival including Best Film, Best Art Direction, and Best Screenplay.
Launched in 2023, CCP Cine Icons is a special program of the CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media Division (CCP FBNMD) which aims to honor and popularize the life and works of National Artists and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining awardees.
Through the partnership with DLSU GMG, the CCP continues to champion the best of Filipino filmmaking and encourage film appreciation among the youth and the general public.
