DESCRIPTION:
Lesley-Anne Cao’s The hand, the secretary, a landscape inconspicuously lays out a collection of terrains that identify no age or place. Each chosen form point to sites and secrets particularly significant to the artist, which are delicately situated as signposts across the gallery floors. Although at first may be obscure and vague, a persistent intimate familiarity dares not to dictate specific locations but incite a sense of existential understanding through the merged imageries of the body’s and of nature’s known topographies. Divided into three differing gestures, Cao hands viewers with suggestions to stories left for them to piece together, speaking merely in measured incidents and accidents. Through its quiet and smallness, a whisper reminds one of the captivating allure of things that usually stand past our usual fields of vision. (I.F.)
