CCP and KACES conduct workshop for teachers on culture and arts-based education

Sep 5, 2025 | Press Release

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its Arts and Education Department (AED), partners with the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service (KACES) to conduct IN TONDO, a two-week workshop for artist-teachers and socially disadvantaged youth from August 26 to September 5, 2025, in various learning centers in Tondo, Manila.

The modules will primarily focus on the use of arts in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) or STEAM.   The program will span three phases, kicking off with a five-day workshop involving Korean artists/arts education experts who will facilitate various art activities for Filipino artists, teachers and mediators.

This implementation is part of the Philippine Cultural and Arts Education Official Development Assistance (ODA) project with Korea, that will use relevant Korean strategies in the field of arts and culture to address social needs of underprivileged children. This will be held at the multipurpose hall of Lakan Dula National High School and will run from August 26 to 30, 2025.

Slated on September 1 to 4, the second phase of the program – the Mediators’ Learning Workshop –

will give the Filipino mediators a chance to implement what they learned from the previous workshop and impart their knowledge to out-of-school youths in Tondo, Manila. Mediators will be divided into  eight groups, with each group attending the workshop for two alternating days.

This program will give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in creative expression, as well as promote a meaningful understanding of arts and culture among disenfranchised youths. Participating institutions and student batches for this phase include Grade 9 and 10 students from Lakan Dula High School, kindergarten students from Self Reliance Development Konkokyo Learning Center, out-of-school youths from Don Bosco Youth Center, and kindergarten students from Tondo Kiddie Class at the Zonta Manila Foundation Inc.

The third and final phase of the program will be a roundtable discussion to evaluate the workshop discussions, activities, and insights gained by the mediators. The discussion will explore future potential partnerships and collaborations in addition to the distribution of certificates. The closing program will be held at CCP’s Bulwagang Roberto Chabet at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gomez (CCP Blackbox theater) on September 5, 2025.

Developed in cooperation  with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea and the Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the project will promote sustained arts education and development for socially disadvantaged groups. Amidst rising interest in Korean culture and media among Filipinos, the project aims to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries through fruitful partnerships and collaborations.

Assisted by 11 participating institutions, the curriculum used in the workshops will incorporate the Arts into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) framework of the Department of Education. The schools and learning centers aiding the program are  Lakan Dula National High School, Self Reliance and Development Konkokyo Learning Center, Don Bosco Youth Center, Tondo Kiddie Class from Zonta Manila Foundation Inc., Raja Soliman Science and Technology High School, Gen.
