DESCRIPTION:

Though known primarily for his paintings, Ryan Rubio’s first foray at sculpture is not entirely new. In his 2006 paintings, figures could be seen making their way out of the frame, threads spiraling out of the canvas to find a new frontier. With Instinctual Creation, he shed all embellishments and focused, instead, on the seamlessness of his process. The outcome is triumphant—his sculptures have transformed the sparseness of his materials and the often ignored human condition into pieces that resonate with vigor and life.

For the past year, Rubio has been going back and forth between Bicol and Manila, collecting and carrying with him rocks that are the main materials of his works. “It is like bringing home a sack of rice,” he recalls as he describes the toil of the numerous trips he made. The artist sources rocks such as green quartz, granite, and silica from the seas and rivers of his hometown Paracale. There are materials he uses as is – without any alteration as he sees these resources as already perfect in the way nature formed them. They are left untouched except for a coat of gloss to let their natural color come out.

But their weight is not a burden. He doesn’t mind the physicality and the discipline. There is ease in how his pieces came to be. Ryan Rubio has gone back to the primal need to create without hesitation or unwanted influences. (Weng Cahiles)
