TANGHALANG PILIPINO'S 24TH SEASON OPENS WITH BANAAG AT SIKAT: ISANG ROCK MUSICAL
Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) continues to delight audiences with its 24th Theater Season (2010-2011) lineup of new plays that celebrate the National Artist as a modern Filipino IDOL. The season opens with Banaag at SIkat: Isang Rock Musical, a production that headlines the collaboration between National Artist for Lieterature Bienvenido Limbera who wrote the libretto and National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal who designed the sets and costumes. This exciting new musical is based on Lope K. Santos' groundbreaking literary opus of the same title about the breakup of the Filipino Family and the rise of socialism in the country.
With music by Lucien Letaba, Banaag at Sikat: Isang Rock Musical universalizes its socialist theme by juxtaposing central, turn-of-the-century Philippines (1911) with music that's very much today, Indie Rock. The production will be staged under the artistic vision of Jose Estrella, a critically-acclaimed director whose works for TP include Orfeo sa Impiyerno (Orpheus Descending) and Ang Pokpok ng Ohio (The Whore from Ohio), among others.
Leading the cast are top-rate stage performers including Ayen Laurel, Franco Laurel, John Arcilla, Roeder Camañag, Angeli Bayani, Banaue Miclat and Al Gatmaitan. Banaag at SIkat: Isang Rock Musical also features seasoned stage actors Clottie Lucero, Emlyn Santos, Greg de Leon and Raymond Roldan, and the TP Actors Company members/alumni Riki Benedicto, Jonathan Tadioan, Kat Castillo, Tara Cabaero and Cheryl Ramos. Also included in the cast are Maria Elcon Cabasag, Kathlyn Castillo, Martha Comia, Aandrei David, Jejie Esguerra, Hazel Maranan, Gino Ramirez and Rachel Alfonso Rubio.
Banaag at Sikat: Isang Rock Musical opened on August 18, 2010 and will run for two weeks (Aug. 18-22, 25-29), with evening shows (8:00PM) from Wednesday to Sunday and matinees (3:00PM) from Friday to Sunday. The musical play will be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).
