Cinemalaya Film Congress on July 13-14

Cinemalaya Film Congress on July 13-14

The Cinemalaya Film Congress 2010 will be held on July 13-14 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.  The Film Congress is a major event of the 6th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition which will run from July 9-18 at the CCP.

The Cinemalaya Film Congress will carry the theme Liberating the Indie Film 2000-2009.  The  Congress aims to examine the myriad notions of “independence” in Filipino indie films of 2000-2009, especially those on inexpensive digital video format; and to evaluate the content and form of specific Filipino indie films of 2000-2009 from the point of view of their "independence."

Other objectives of the Cinemalaya Film Congress are to identify specific ways in which particular indie films of 2000-2009 have succeeded or failed in liberating themselves from all conventions, especially those that impinge unconsciously on the filmmaking process and to examine how the filmmakers have resolved conflicts between their commitment to pursue an artistic vision and the need or desire to reach out to all types of audiences, from the elite to the popular.

The first day of the Congress will be opened by Cinemalaya Festival Director and former CCP President Nestor O. Jardin who will deliver the welcome remarks and  Dr. Nicanor G. Tiongson, Cinemalaya Film Congress Director,  who will make the keynote address on the subject The New Indie Film 2000-2009.  Panel discussions for the first Congress day will be on Portraits of Poverty, Gallery of Gays, The Vicious and the Violent while discussions on the second day of the Congress will focus on Images of the Marginalized, Filmic Styles:  From Neo Realism to Revised Genre and Artistic Vision Vis-a-vis Market demands.

Slated to lead the discussions are Eli Guieb, Justino Dormiendo, Tito Valiente, Gary Devilles, Yason Banal, Danton Remoto, Lito Zulueta, Patrick Campos, Nestor Castro, Roland Tolentino, Bienvenido Lumbera, Liza Martinez, Francis Cruz, Alvin Yapan and Ed Cabagnot.  To moderate the discussions are Flordeliz Abanto, Tracy Montelibano-Aquino, Jag Garcia, Chi-Chi Fajardo-Robles and Ed Lejano.

Each panel discussion will be followed by an open forum.  The film congress will end with panel reports to be made by Irene Zamora, Joni Gutierrez, Cenon Palomares, Nonoy Lauzon, Nikki Garde-Torres and Jane Vinculado.  Dr. Tiongson will close the Congress with a summary of recommendations and resolutions.

Filmmakers, writers, critics, members of the academe and industry and students from all over the Philippines are expected to attend the event.
