BP dancer wins at Dance Olympics

CANDICE ADEA WINS SILVER AT THE OLYMPICS OF DANCE

Candice Adea, 24, principal dancer of Ballet Philippines , resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines , has emerged victorious and has put the Philippines on the international dance map by bagging the silver medal in the prestigious USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson , Mississippi .

With only two Filipinos among 119 contestants Adea and partner Jean Marc Cordero have beaten the odds in a field where countries like USA and Japan are formidable. Asian countries are beginning to raise its glory in the ballet scene as China , Japan , South Korea and Chinese Taipei also proudly bagged medals and other much coveted recognitions. Other winners along Candice Adea in the Senior Divison are as follows: Gold-Cao Shuci (China), Silver-Candice Adea (Philippines) and Kosuke Okumura (Japan), Bronze- Kyohei Yoshida (Japan), Zhang Xi (China), Maki Onuki (Japan).  The USA-IBC, an Olympic style competition where tomorrow's stars vie for gold, silver, bronze medals, cash awards, company contracts and scholarship,  is only held once every four years. This 2010 is the 9th USA  Intenational Ballet Competition where Candice Adea has conquered the world stage.

Candice Adea and Jean Marc Cordero's winning interpretation
of the Diana and Acteon grand pas de deux

Jean Marc Cordero, 24 also a principal dancer at BP is the first ever male Filipino ballet dancer to be part and become semi-finalist at Jackson . He also performed with Adea for the finals where they interpreted the Diana and Acteon grand pas de deux and Sapin-Sapin as choreographed by Coach Victor Ursabia.

For their semi-fnal round they essayed Bam Damian’s award winning Evacuation duet. Jean Marc and Candice are set to perform their acclaimed first round duet; the Don Quixote pas de deux in the  winners Gala where they will be accompanied by a full orchestra in the concluding event for the international competition.

In February 2010, Adea and Cordero are set to be performing the full Don Quixote ballet at the CCP Main Theatre as part of Ballet Philippines 41st season: The Hero’s Journey.

Adea joined Ballet Philippines in 2003 and has starred in stage productions like Snow White, Coppelia, Peter Pan’s Neverneverland, the Nutcracker and Amada for which she received the Gawad Buhay Award for Most Outstanding female lead dancer for 2009. In 2007, she competed at the 9th New York International Ballet Competition. And this 2010, through years of hard work, undeterred discipline, and passion for the craft, Adea’s efforts has been recognized with flying colors.

According to Coach Victor Ursabia, it has been a tough road for Adea and Cordero with the qualifying rounds, the semi-finals and the finals.  The Filipino representatives were crowd favorites even from the early stages of the competition. Adea’s outstanding showmanship and sensual interpretation made her remarkable among the competition’s wide array of audience. The dancers also benefited greatly from the coaching of former BP principals: Cecille Sicangco, Toni Lopez Gonzalez, Nonoy Froilan, Nicolas Pacaña, Gina Katigbak-Garcia, Grethel Domingo-Raypon, and former directors Bam Damian and Noordin Jumalon . A great success and honor like this one is not without the generous support of institutions and people, specifically the Philippine Airlines, the Ballet Philippines board led by Margie Moran-Floirendo and donations from dance supporters including Ms.Sofia Zobel-Elizalde who believe in the great potential of Filipino ballet dancers to be world renowned talents. Before their first performance Filipino prima ballerina Maniya Barredo, based in Atlanta , called the dancers and gave them words of encouragement.

BP artistic director Paul Alexander Morales says they are ecstatic with the win “proving that ballet in the Philippines is indeed world class”. He adds that they hope “that the audience and the new administration will be inspired and generous with their support for the often neglected performing arts.”

Acclaimed Filipino ballerinas have competed in Jackson before which had been a stepping stone for their careers on the international stage yet Philippines has never won a medal in this competition until now.
